Streamlining Nurse Call System Training

May 2011

Hill-Rom, a leading worldwide manufacturer and provider of medical technologies and related services for the health care industry, was planning to launch its NaviCare® Nurse Call system (NNC).  This state-of-the art, internet-based call system for hospitals and other patient-care centers, was a complete redesign of an existing 13-year-old system.

The challenge for Hill-Rom was to provide rapid, easy to use training and materials prior to launch of a much more robust system without adding to the burden of busy nurses and installers.

Working under a tight timeline, InfoPros quickly evaluated what items in the information center needed to be updated based on the new system and what could be reused to streamline the training development process.  It was important ensure the most up-to-date information was fed into the training materials as the beta version of the new system was being tested and adjustments were made.

Two sets of nurses training materials were created: 

  • A single-page quick reference guide provided a concise overview of the system – its options, steps for using it, etc.
  • A Clinical Training Manual was used by Hill-Rom clinicians to train nurses at their locations.  The manual efficiently helped nurses fully utilize the feature-rich system and served as a post-training reference.

In addition, a one-week, hands-on classroom installer training program allowed the group of seasoned installers to experience an installation and ask questions prior to going into the field.

As a result, an effective nurses training program made it simpler to learn and make full use of the robust system without adding to their work load.  Nurses were particularly fond of the quick-reference guides which they found helpful for their day-to-day needs.   And, installers were fully prepared leading to faster and lower-cost installations.
